FAQ: THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON HOME CHARGING.
How can I charge at home?
Depending on the model, the standard charging cable (Mode 2) or the Flexible Fast Charger is included when you buy an electrified BMW – so you can charge your vehicle with any standard household socket. The Flexible Fast Charger can also be used – with a suitable adapter cable available separately – at industrial sockets (high voltage) with a maximum power of up to 11 kW.
For added convenience, speed, and safety, you can select a wallbox to significantly reduce charging times when compared to standard household sockets. Two models are available:
BMW WALLBOX.
The BMW Wallbox features a maximum power of up to 22 kW, a minimalist and weatherproof design, integrated cable storage, and Bluetooth® connectivity. And user identification is possible with the My BMW App*.
SMART PARTNER WALLBOX
The Smart Wallbox from our partner offers extended connectivity in addition to a maximum power output of 22 kW and convenient handling. It offers additional functions and intelligent home charging controls. For example, you can integrate your Home Energy Management System (HEMS), a remote control, and ensure the precise metering and billing of individual charges at home.
What do I need to consider before selecting a home charging solution?
Before selecting a home charging solution, you should check the connection conditions of the power company providing electricity to your home.
What should I take into consideration when charging from a standard household socket?
It is prohibited to use an extension cable and multi-plug connectors. A charging rate of 1.3 kW at 6 A is set as the default. You can either switch this current limitation off entirely in the vehicle settings menu or set the AC charging current to the precise amperage according to your electrical installation.
Who will install my Wallbox or an industrial socket for the Flexible Fast Charger at my home?
You can quite simply book our installation service along with your Wallbox. This guarantees that your Wallbox is installed and set up safely and professionally. Incidentally, the service can also be booked for our efficient industrial socket if you wish to use your Flexible Fast Charger with the appropriate adapter at home.
What are the differences between a BMW Wallbox and a Smart Partner Wallbox?
The BMW Wallbox ensures fast, safe, and convenient charging at home. The wallbox can be connected to the My BMW App* via Bluetooth® and managed by the user. For many BMW drivers, the BMW Wallbox is the right solution.
However, there are some drivers who have additional requirements for a home charging solution that offers additional functions, such as remote access to the wallbox or intelligent management of charging processes.
Can I drive an electric vehicle if I have no charging option at home?
And it goes without saying that you can simply use the steadily expanding public charging network of BMW Charging or other charging stations as available, such as those from your employer. The My BMW App* or the navigation system in your vehicle shows you public charge points in the vicinity. You will also find the overview of public charging infrastructure for Europe at www.bmw-charging.com – this is where you can find out about charge points near your home or your place of work as well as places of interest in your current surroundings. FAQ: THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON BMW CHARGING.
What is BMW Charging?
BMW Charging is our all-round carefree solution for charging your BMW. Products and services from BMW Charging provide you with numerous tailor-made offers for charging at home and at public charging stations. For instance, the charging cable for public charging (Mode 3) and the BMW Charging Card in Europe are included in the supply schedule of your BMW (offer depends on the market). With the My BMW App* and the BMW Charging Card, you have access to over 200,000 charge points in inner cities within Europe, at car parks and along important traffic axes – including high-power charging stations for ultra-fast charging. With BMW Maps and the My BMW App* you will even find more than 600,000 charge points worldwide. In addition, most vehicles are supplied with the Flexible Fast Charger for convenient charging at home. You can quire simply add further offers from BMW Charging to meet your wishes and needs, e.g. wallboxes for especially convenient charging at home. No matter whether you require charging hardware, digital solutions or services – our range is comprehensive. It even includes an installation service for your wallbox or a special green electricity tariff for charging at home.
How can I check the charging status?
Easy. Use the My BMW app* in your smartphone or in the car to see the current status and the available range of your electric vehicle.
What are the optimal battery charging levels for my BMW electric car?
It’s best to maintain a charge of between 10 and 80 per cent. Lower or higher levels are possible, but to optimise the life of your battery, it is recommended to stay between 10 and 80 per cent. In your vehicle’s menu, you can easily and conveniently set your target charge to 80 per cent, so you’ll never have to worry about it.
A target charge of 80 per cent should cover all your daily driving needs. If you actually need more, simply set a higher target.
What should I look out for when charging my BMW plug-in hybrid?
As its name suggests, a plug-in hybrid can be charged from a socket, a Wallbox or at a public charging station. When you are on the road, you need the charging cable for public charging (mode 3), which is included in the scope of delivery in Europe. The maximum efficiency of a plug-in hybrid is achieved with a fully charged battery; which means that a charging facility should be available at home and at the workplace. Charge your BMW plug-in hybrid as often as possible so that you can always make full use of the additional electric drive.
What is the difference between charging with alternating current (AC), direct current (DC) and a high power charging point (HPC)?
Basically, the time needed to charge will vary. For electric vehicles, charging takes longer with alternating current (AC) – depending on the cable and charging point – and direct current (DC)* is significantly faster. Ultra-fast charging via direct current (DC)* is possible at High Power Charging (HPC)* charging stations, which are offered by our partner IONITY in Europe. The battery of a BMW iX, for example, can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in less than 40 minutes with a maximum power of 200 kW.***
Please note: when charging DC and HPC, you should hold the charging plug on the vehicle until the plug is locked. This ensures that the charging process starts without a problem.
* Currently only relevant for BMW electric vehicles. Can I also drive longer distances with my BMW electric car?
Yes, no problem. For particularly fast charging, you can use the High-Power Charging (HPC) stations of our partner IONITY along the main European motorways. The My BMW App* or the navigation system in the vehicle will show you right where they are. All you need to do is set a search filter. With a BMW iX, for example, you can charge up to 150 kilometres of additional reach with a short coffee break of around ten minutes. If you take a longer break at an HPC charging station, you can charge the BMW iX from 10 to 80 per cent in about 35 minutes – whether you can take advantage of the vehicle’s maximum power handling of up to 200 kW depends on the local infrastructure.*** Access to the IONITY network is available through BMW Charging at particularly attractive conditions.
What’s the best way to prepare my vehicle for the next trip?
Heating and cooling require energy. For that reason, it makes sense to bring your vehicle to the desired temperature while it’s still plugged in, so you can start your trip with the maximum range. It’s easy to set the departure time and “pre-condition” to the desired climate using the My BMW App* or the vehicle menu. That way, you’ll have a full charge and the perfect temperature right when you’re ready to leave – automatically.
